The discovery of the present- Art book review
Museum Singer in Laren is currently hosting an exhibition of surprising highlights from the art collection of the JK Art Foundation. Waanders publishers produced a handy book to accompany the exhibition, The discovery of the present. A book that is also wonderful to read on its own.
Coast as a hobby
I am not an art expert, but I have become more interested in art since I took the course ‘learning to illustrate’ at the LOI. Here, of course, art also came up for discussion and since that time, I do look at paintings differently and am also interested in the different movements but also techniques. That is why I really enjoy reviewing the books of Waanders every time. In which The Discovery of the Present is another wonderful book with beautiful art photos’s and stories.
The discovery of the present
The book: The discovery of the present- Picasso, Dali, Mondriaan, Klee, Brancusi, Mirò, Daniëls is written by Edo Dijksterhuis and Charlotte Holtsma and therefore belongs to the exhibition currently on display at the Singer in Laren. However, if you have not seen this exhibition, this is a wonderful book with background stories about artists past and present.
In the 20th century
Because more has happened in the 20th century than ever before. Society, technology, politics, as well as intellectual debate would never be the same again. And art witnessed it. Using many surprising highlights from the art collection of the JK Art Foundation, it is portrayed that the developments of around 1900 still color our world today. The work of Picasso, Dalí, Brancusi, Van Dongen, Mondrian, Modigliani, Miró, Klee, Léger, Delaunay, Fontana, Daniëls, Anish Kapoor and many others is not historical, but highly topical.
The book
Art was witness to the great changes in the 20th century. Using many surprising highlights from the art collection of the JK Art Foundation, this book illustrates that the developments of around 1900 still color our world today. The work of these artists is not historical but highly contemporary.
The discovery of the present is a wonderful book, in writing and pictures’s. In the foreword you can read that in 2021-2022 both the Singer Laren and the Noordbrabants Museum will show a broad selection of top works of modern and contemporary art under the title The discovery of today. Nice is the book that accompanies this exhibition. It contains interesting stories about how to look at paintings, as well as how art evolved.
The artist biographies
The major part of the book is about the Artist Biographies and this is something I personally find incredibly enjoyable to read. Each artist has a work of art by him or her as well. Which makes it immediately clear what the art stream of this artist is. The book begins with Odilon Redon (1840-1916) and ends with Gijs van Lith (1984). Everything in between is a work of art in itself. It’s a real reading and browsing book.
