But despite the fact that there are so many cute girls’ names, the same girl’s name was once again number 1 on the list of most popular girls’ names of 2020. The name ‘Emma’ was given 685 times in 2020. A simple, short, Dutch name: nice to see that this name is and remains so popular.

Then it’s time for the boys’ names. Surprisingly, the most popular boy’s name of 2020 is also no different than in 2019: Noah is still an unprecedentedly popular name. A whopping 807 boys were given the name Noah last year. Furthermore, the list of boys’ names looks as follows:

What is funny to see is that the most popular boy and girl names in the Netherlands do not always correspond to the most popular names per province. This is how North Brabant differs: there Daan was the most popular boy’s name and Tess the most popular girl’s name. Noah only ranks 6th in North Brabant and Emma ranks 5th.
North Holland follows the same trend: Emma and Noah are the most popular names there.
How to choose a name for your child?
Some parents deliberately choose from the list of popular children’s names, while others go out of their way to avoid it. By choosing a rare childhood name, there is little chance that someone in your family will choose the same name, or your child will end up in the class of a namesake.
When you choose a really special name, not everyone may pronounce it the right way. If you find this annoying, it might be better to choose another name.
